Diana Taurasi is setting record after record this year, recently she set one the world can relate to, scoring the most points in WNBA history.
Diana Taurasi has had one of the greatest years anyone could hope to have. She married her long-time team mate, Penny Taylor before the season started and then moved on to basketball.
The first record she set was passing Katie Smith for the most three point field goals made. The thing is, Smith played 482 games for her 906 three point field goals. Smith made an incredible 1.9 three pointers every single game. Taurasi has now played 377 games she has 933 three point field goals. This is 2.5 three point field goals every single game. Unless something happens, she will become the first ever played to pass the 1,000 three point field goals made in her career.
The second record she set is obviously the scoring record, and again it is the time frame in which she has completed this amazing achievement. It is safe to say that Tina Thompson is going to go down as one of the all-time greats of the WNBA, she played 496 games which is second all time , hit the most field goals, hit the third most free throws and collected the third most rebounds. She was 23rd in WNBA history for total steals and 13th in total blocks. Her 7,488 points looked good to stand for a while at the top of the standings, Tamika Catchings was not able to beat it before retiring. Taurasi needed 120 games less to better the mark.
The record which I think is the most impressive that Taurasi has set is she is the only player who has scored 7,000 points, has 1,500 rebounds and 1,500 assists. This possibly means Taurasi is quite possibly the greatest player in WNBA history. This is a debate for another article, but lets look at the numbers.
Taurasi is equal 24th in total games played (377) and at the age of 35 will probably not top the record of 499 held by DeLisha Milton-Jones.
Taurasi is currently sitting second all time for total field goals made (2,399) only 231 behind Thompson. Likewise, Taurasi is second in total free throws made (1,763) only 241 behind Tamika Catchings.
Despite being the all-time scoring leader, Taurasi has 1,598 assists which is good enough to place her fifth all-time. With only 110 more she can pass Becky Hammon and move into fourth.
Her rebounding is quite phenomenal. Even though she is a guard, Taurasi is 22nd all-time for defensive rebounds (1,325) and 38th all time for total rebounds (1,524).
Taurasi is sitting in 28th all-time for total steals (397). She could quite conceivably finish her career in the top 20 all-time.
However, I have left one of the most impressive stats until last. Taurasi is 19th all-time in career blocks. 19th, as a guard. That is simply incredible. Add to this her three championships and there can be some small debate but not much. Diana Taurasi has to be considered in the conversation as greatest of all time in the WNBA. I know i said it was a debate for another article but I have just convinced myself.
