After a WNBL season Kelsey Griffin would like to forget, maybe there is a ray of sunshine after she signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun

For Kelsey Griffin 2017 was a roller coaster she is unlikely to forget in a hurry. Fortunately for Australian basketball, Griffin was naturalized in 2015 and so was able to represent Australia in the Asia Cup in the middle of the year.

I say fortunately because despite losing the final, Griffin was named player of the tournament. To those who have watched Griffin play this is hardly surprising. She is one of the best and most determined defenders ever to play in Australia. There have been several games where I say she is simply playing mean.

However, while playing for her home team, the Bendigo Spirit, Griffin injured her hip, requiring surgery. Fortunately Griffin is as determined to heal as she is determined to play good basketball.

This means the start of 2018, Griffin, despite not playing since the injury, has been offered to come to training camp with the Connecticut Sun. Now, Griffin is a known commodity to most Sun fans. She played there for five years after being drafted by the Minnesota Lynx with the 3rd pick in the 2010 draft before being traded to the Sun for future draft picks.

Griffin fell a little out of love with basketball while playing in the WNBA and came out to Australia. She has rediscovered her spark for the game while playing with the Spirit. more importantly, she has discovered how to win. The Spirit went back to back n 2013 and 2014 with Griffin being named grand final MVP both years.

Even though it is only a training camp invite, hopefully the Sun hierarchy sign Griffin to a season contract. Her perseverance deserves it but more importantly her play demands it.
