It is finally official, Dewanna Bonner is back with the Phoenix Mercury
After a year off, Dewanna Bonner is back for the Phoenix Mercury. In a free agency period which has changed the fortunes of a lot of teams, this move puts the Mercury right back near the top of the WNBA. Adding All-Star caliber talent will do that for a franchise.
Bonner is a franchise player by herself. Her career averages are 29.2 minutes, 13.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. Her shooting numbers are equally impressive, Bonner has a slash line of 42/30/85.
To put all of this into perspective, Bonner’s points numbers have her in 30th all-time for points per game. She is also 41st all-time for total points (3,647). In rebounds, Bonner average has her in 40th all-time. These two categories alone will help the Mercury out next season. She is also one of the best defenders in the game.
However, it is the formation of a big three which makes this re-signing so valuable. The Mercury made it to the playoffs behind the play of Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi. However, despite Taurasi’s record in elimination games, they did not have the firepower to take the next step.
Bonner changes all that. No longer are teams able to double team Taurasi. as effectively There were times teams were triple teaming Griner which was sometimes was the only way to stop her.
Here is the thing, with the addition of Bonner, last year’s scoring champion may be more efficient . Yes you read that correctly, more efficient. With all three on the court, defenses are going to struggle to contain them, especially with how Taurasi can stretch the floor with her shooting.
The Mercury starting five looks scary with Griner starting in the middle, the two forwards are Bonner and Sancho Lyttle. The off-guard is Taurasi with Danielle Robinson at the point. For the first time in a couple of years, the Mercury have good depth.
With Leilani Mitchell, Camille Little, Stephanie Talbot, Emma Cannon and Yvonne Turner on the bench
The WNBA is looking like it is going to be it’s most competitive – ever. It is fairly safe to say Bonner move the needle for Phoenix and the fans are excited by it.
Now all that has to happen is the season needs to hurry up and start.
