As one of their many signings, the Atlanta Dream signed ex Indiana Fever guard Maggie Lucas.
The Atlanta DreamĀ have a talented and versatile back-court which is one of the deepest in the WNBA. It got even deeper when they added Maggie Lucas, probably as a replacement for Bria Holmes who is taking the season off due to pregnancy.
The Dream have four starting caliber guards. Angel McCoughtry, Laysha Clarendon, Renee Montgomery and Brittney Sykes would all be pushing to start on almost any team they play on. Adding Maggie Lucas to this mix just makes them even more potent.
Lucas is a three year pro out of Penn State who has missed most of the last two seasons through a knee issue. When she played for Indiana, Lucas came off the bench, averaging 12.8 minutes, 4.9 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists.
These numbers are solid for a bench piece. However, what people may not remember is Lucas can flat out score. In one of the four games she was bale to play in 2016, Lucas dropped 22 points against the Dallas Wings.
Adding this scoring punch allows coach Nikki Collen to rotate all five players through the guard spots, reducing fatigue and fatigue related injuries.
Lucas also has the ability to space the floor with her shooting. She is a career 33.5 percent shooter from deep. This will help create space for Elizabeth Williams, Imani McGee-Stafford and Jessica Breland inside the arc.
Their ability to one-on-one with players will make them much harder to stop.
Lucas is going to find it hard to get regular minutes. What she is going to have to do is make the most of the minutes she gets, showing her offense is still a force to be reckoned with.
Once Lucas can get confidence back in her body, she is going to be a great addition to this now stacked Dream roster.
