Shenise Johnson re-signed with the Indiana Fever despite not being fully recovered.
Shenise Johnson has re-signed with the Indiana Fever. Johnson played 14 games last season before being one of the many injuries the Fever suffered last year. During a practice in July, Johnson tore her ACL which was disastrous for the team.
Before Johnson’s injury the Fever were 7-9, which is still a losing record but better than after she was injured. Without her they went 2-16 which highlights the importance of the 5’11” guard out of Miami.
Before the injury, Johnson played 14 games averaging 24.9 minutes, 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. This stat line shows the incredible all-round talent Johnson is able to bring to the team.
Not only that, Johnson is an incredibly good shooter. From the field Johnson shot 55-of-127. This is good for 43.3 percent. Johnson was passable from 3-point range, going 10-of-30 from deep which is 33.3 percent made.
However, it was from the line that Johnson excelled, going 38-of-40 from the stripe. This is in incredible 95 percent. The fact that Johnson got to the line almost four times a hame shows how she attracted the defense with her penetration.
Pokey Chatman has shown tremendous faith in Johnson’s ability to recover, signing her to another season while she is still injured. However, due to this season being a transitional season, where the Fever are potentially going to struggle, it is a gamble worth taking.
johnson has only had one major injury setback during her six year WNBA career and it is this one. As far as Chatman would be concerned, when Johnson returns she will help guide this team through the potential dark period.
Let us hope for the sake of all Fever fans and fans of the WNBA, Johnson is back on court sooner rather than later and she is able to return to her pre-injury form.
