Rebecca Allen signed on for her fourth season with the New York Liberty. Allen originally signed with the Liberty back in 2015, playing two games before missing the remainder of the season with a right knee injury.
In 2016, Allen missed the first 12 games due to national team commitments before playing 21 games, even starting six of them. Allen was deadly from 3-point land making 17-30 in these games, good for 56.7 percent.
In 2017 Allen played a career high 33 games but only averaged 9.2 minutes per contest. This meant that most of her numbers were down. It is hard as a player to have confidence in yourself when it appears your coach does not appear to have confidence in you.
This season should be different for the young Australian. Allen is a solid 3-point shooter in the right system. It is my suspicion that the system which will be put in place by new head coach Katie Smith will involve a lot of action on the perimeter.
Considering Smith made her name in the WNBA with her 3-point abilities. Smith held the record from most 3-point shots attempted and made until Diana Taurasi overtook her in the 2017 season.
If Allen can recapture her 2016 from from deep, Smith will keep increasing her minutes in the 2108 season.
Allen in continuing to try and improve her game. She chose to skip her home WNBL season to travel to Europe. She would have done this for two reasons, not only is the European season more lucrative financially, players live and breate basketball for months at a time.
This has the effect of improving an athletes game as they do not have any distractions. If Allen improves her game to the next level, expect to see her as the seventh or eighth player off the bench behind Sugar Rodgers, last years Sixth Woman of the Year.
