The Phoenix Mercury have re-signed the promising Emma Cannon.

Emma Cannon has re-signed with the Phoenix Mercury after a very promising rookie season. She was only one of five Mercury players to play every game of the season.

Cannon was an un-drafted free agent who signed with the Mercury for her rookie season. Cannon was a pleasant surprise for the Mercury. Cannon led all rookies in field goal percentage with 49.2 percent shooting.

She also ranked third among all rookies in rebounding with 3.6 per game. Cannon also finished seventh in scoring among all rookies with 4.4 per game.

Considering the turnover in the Mercury team last year, it was good to see the success story that was Cannon.

In the off-season prior to Cannon first signing on with the Mercury she played in Russia. She led the entire Russian league in scoring, ranking ahead of two familiar names. Cannon averaged 20.0 points per game, second was Diana Taurasi with 18.5 per game, third was Brittney Griner who averaged 17.1 points per game.

It is easy to see where Phoenix may have got the intelligence on Cannon. However, Cannon did something else special, being the only player in the Russian league to average a double-double, she also collected 10.1 rebounds per game.

There is a chance that Cannon’s role will decrease when the new season starts. The Mercury added some pretty incredible paint players in Sancho Lyttle and Dewanna Bonner.

With Cannon’s ability and drive, I am sure she will play herself into meaningful minutes. She may not space the floor but she has a tenacity and work ethic to add value to the team.
