In an off-season where high caliber players are either coming back or signing with different teams, the Angel McCoughtry re-signing is one of the biggest.

In an off-season where there have been more moves than a chess tournament, the Atlanta Dream have made three of the best. They first signed Renee Montgomery, then Jessica Breland. Finally  they lured Angel McCoughtry back.

McCoughtry is the most significant of the three signings as she is an All-Star caliber player who would make any team better. Her 19.49 points per game is good enough for fourth all-time in WNBA history. Her 4,990 career points is good enough for 18th all-time, in just seven years as a pro.

However, McCoughtry has more than just scoring in her arsenal. Her 4.96 rebounds per game has her in 64th all-time. What is more impressive is her 413 total offensive rebounds has McCoughtry in 52nd all-time. Lets not forget McCoughtry is a 6’1″ combination guard/forward.

However, McCoughtry is more than just offense. Her 2.18 steals per game has her third all-time. She has 559 career steals has her in twelfth all-time. If she continues at her current rate she will be firmly entrenched in the top ten all-time by the end of the season.

While McCoughtry is a high volume scorer, she is not good from beyond the arc. This will not matter on the current Dream squad. She has Renee Montgomery (34.6 percent), Brittany Sykes (33.6 percent), Tiffany Hayes (32 percent) and Layshia Clarendon (28.8 percent) to take the pressure off floor spacing.

McCoughtry specializes from the mid-range into the paint. Her ability to draw a foul is going to be legendary. Her 1,322 free-throws made has her in tenth all time. Likewise her 1,663 free throws attempted has her in tenth all-time.

The other impact McCoughtry has is she makes the Dream starting line-up make sense. Coach Nikki Collen had to decide if she surrounded Elizabeth Williams and Jessica Breland with shooters or try and find a traditional wing.

With McCoughtry, the only decision Collen has to make is who starts at the guard positions.

The Dream were always going to improve on their 10th place finish from last season. With the addition of Montgomery and Breland they were playoff bound. Now with McCoughtry in the squad they are true contenders.
