When the Las Vegas Aces re-signed Sequoia Holmes they showed the heart of the team still beats.

Sequoia Holmes started in the WNBA a long time ago, back in 2008 with the Houston Comets playing 17 games. Her next season in the WNBA was 2010 where she played 15 games for the Phoenix Mercury.

From there Holmes went overseas, never giving up hope of playing in the WNBA again. Fortunately for her, the San Antonio Stars signed Holmes for the 2017 season. Then, in the off-season the club was sold, creating more uncertainty for the 6’1″ guard out of Nevada.

Fortunately, the Las Vegas Aces saw the need for the local talent and re-signed her. For her career, Holmes has averaged 2.8 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. These numbers are not earth shattering but the value of Holmes is not in her stats.

At the start of last season the Stars were not playing well. Kelsey Plum was coming back from a high ankle sprain, Moriah Jefferson was struggling with her knee and the team were losing.

It is very easy to fall into a losing culture, particularly for a young team who have no history of winning. This is here Holmes is great for the team. Holmes made the team fun to watch, the Stars bench last season was the most entertaining in the entire league.

However, it is not all laughs and towel waving with Holmes. Scratch the surface and you will see an athlete with the iron will to realize her dream of coming back into the WNBA.

From 2010 to 2017, Holmes worked hard overseas, away from family and friends, in order to make it back into her home league. Now, Holmes has made it back for the second season in a row.

This is the first time she has achieved this in her WNBA career. Despite her numbers, Holmes’ story is one which can be held up to every aspiring athlete that hard work pays off. Holmes is now playing for her home town team, I could not be happier for her.
