Welcome to the first edition of Washington Wednesday where we take a look at news stories surrounding the Washington Mystics from the last week.

The Mystics opened their training camp roster with 17 players this year. They have to whittle this down to 12 for the regular season roster. This team had bad luck with injuries last season and star Emma Meesseman is missing this season with national team commitments

As with each team, they have their core players, players who should get a spot and players fighting for a roster spot. Below is how the Mystics will probably view their roster.

Definite Probable Fighting for a spot
Elena Delle Donne Ariel Atkins AJ Alix
Monique Currie Natasha Cloud Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
Krystal Thomas Tianna Hawkins Myisha Hines-Allen
Kristi Tolliver Ivory Latta Derereaux Peters
Taylor Hill Asia Taylor LaToya Sanders
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt Allison Hightower

Elena Delle Donne is always going to be one of the definite players on any team. Monique Currie appears to be Meesseman’s replacement and Kristi Tolliver has something to prove after last season.

Krystal Thomas is a true anchor in the middle and Taylor Hill is coming back from injury. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt may raise some eyebrows but her defensive intensity lifts the Mystics when she is on court.

The number seven draft pick, Ariel Atkins should easily make the team. Allison Hightower will return to the team for a full year after her comeback from injury at the end of last season. Her high paced play changes the game style for the Mystics.

Asia Taylor, Natasha Cloud, Tianna Hawkins and Ivory Latta will all make it hard for the other players to make the cut.

The Mystics have a great issue with too much depth. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, LaToya Sanders, and Devereaux Peters all have something to offer. AJ Alix and Myisha Hines-Allen are going to struggle to make an impression.

The Mystics open the preseason with a game against the Minnesota Lynx in Des Moines on the 6th of May. They then come home to host the Indiana Fever on the 12th of May.

The Mystics then open their regular season at home taking on the Indiana Fever again on the 20th of May.

Come back Wednesday next week for the second edition of Washington Wednesdays.
