Welcome to Sunday Sky, the weekly column where we take a look at the stories surrounding the Chicago Sky.
After a disappointing season in 2017, the Chicago Sky have looked to reload. They re-signed core players Allie Quigley and Stefanie Dolson. However, it was in the draft they really succeeded. They had the third and fourth pick of this draft, thanks to a savvy trade during last season.
With these picks they selected Gabby WIlliams and Diamond DeShields. While there were some question marks over DeShields locker room antics, a year in the professional league of Turkey has shown she is over that. Williams has been touted as the future of the WNBA.
The Sky opened their preseason campaign today against the new-look Atlanta Dream. They came away with a loss, 78-61. Coach Amber Stocks put a number of players through their paces. Jordan Hooper, Kahleah Copper and Alaina Coates played 21 minutes each.Copper was the best of the three with nine points.
This shows that Stocks is looking at all 17 players on their training camp roster. Here is how the Sky probably view their roster.
Definite | Probable | Fighting for a spot |
Diamond DeShields | Alaina Coates | Renee Bennett |
Stefanie Dolson | Kahleah Copper | Amarah Coleman |
Allie Quigley | Jamierra Faulkner | Ameryst Alston |
Courtney Vandersloot | Cheyenne Parker | Chelsea Hopkins |
Gabby Williams | Jordan Hooper | Linnae Harper |
Alex Montgomery | Adut Bulgak |
Of the six definite players on the roster Courntey Vandersloot and Diamond DeShields are still overseas. Stefanie Dolson, Allie Quigley, Gabby Williams and Alex Montgomery all had light hit outs.
Jamierra Faulkner is also still not playing. It was obvious that Stocks wanted to see more of Hooper, Copper and Coates on the probable list. She also started Bulgak but 1-of-6 from a starter who is looking to impress is not good enough.
The player who impressed the most on this list, looking good with 13 points and eight rebounds was Cheyenne Parker. If she keeps numbers like that up she will make it on to the squad.
Of the players fighting to get a spot, Chelseas Hopkins started at point and only saw eight minutes, not a good sign.
The Sky play this next preseason game on the 7th of May against the Indiana Fever at Indiana. They then round out their preseason with a game against the Minnesota Lynx in Minnesota on the 12th of May.
The Sky then begin their regular season with another trip to Indiana to take on the Fever.
Come back next week for more of Sky Saturdays where we will have all the roster updates and game recaps.
