With so many stories out of the season opener, Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury upstages them all.
The first game of the season had story lines aplenty. DeWanna Bonner is back after sitting out last season. Liz Cambage is also back after sevel years out of the league. She is also taking on one of the best bigs in the game in Brittney Griner.
Azura Stevens, who surprised many by nominating early for the draft was playing her first regular season game.
Add to this Briann January is playing for a new team after such a wonderful tenure with the Indiana Fever. Sancho Lyttle is also joining the Mercury. It will also be interesting to see how last years Rookie of the Year, Aliisha Gray comes back in her second year.
Cambage had 18 points, as did Skylar Diggins-Smith. Bonner had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Stevens only played 15 minutes collecting three points and six rebounds.
However, enter stage left Diana Taurasi. The superstar needed four 3-point makes to be the first ever player in WNBA to make 1,000. In true Taurasi style she made sure by scoring five.
The only other players in WNBA/NBA history to score 1,000 3-pointers in less than 400 games are Damian Lillard, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. This is a tremendous group to be associated with.
Taurasi would go on to score a game high 26 points which helped the Mercury to a 86-78 victory in the season opener. At the age of 35, Taurasi is not showing ant signs of slowing down and is looking like creating more and more history.
The next stop for one of the greatest players ever to play the game is to be the first WNBA player to score 8,000 points in a career. At the curent pace, this should happen in the next five or sic games.
