In one of the many headline moves of the WNBA free agency period Angel McCoughtry signed with the Las Vegas Aces.
In a move which makes the Las Vegas Aces contenders they signed on star player Angel McCoughtry. This move signals that this franchise is in win now mode still and are very hopeful of signing Australia superstar Liz Cambage again.
McCoughtry is a bona fide scorer and has incredibly active hands on defense. Such is the style of her play that the Atlanta Dream were a game away from the WNBA finals with her and bottom of the WNBA standings without her.
She adds a level of excitement to this already exciting and dynamic team. She will probably play more of the off guard role, letting Kelsey Plum run the offense. Plum has gone from a prolific scorer in college to a facilitator in the WNBA.
McCoughtry would most probably play the two guard on this team, pushing last years first pick in the WNBA draft Jackie Young to the bench. This will leave Kelsey Plum running this team and they look their best with her at the point.
Kayla McBride will still play on the wing and as defenses collapse on McCougtry, McBride is going to have un precedented space for her shot. Teams still have to double McCoughtry so they will most likely leave Plum and McBribe open, much to their peril.
However, it is not all bright and shiny for the Vegas franchise. McCoughtry is not the best 3-point shooter in the world, In fact, she only shoots at 28.6 percent from deep for her career. This may impact the ability of the twin towers in the paint.
Both A’Ja Wilson and Liz Cambage make a living in the paint. Having defensive players being able to double team them by leaving McCoughtry open behind the line could be potentially problematic.
Fortunately Vegas coach, Bill Laimbeer, seems to prefer the older school of basketball where a high percentage two point shot is more valuable than a lower percentage three. He has three months to iron out this potential wrinkle.
One thing is for sure, the Las Vegas Aces have announced their championship intent this season with the McCoughtry signing amongst others. Aces fans need to strap in for the ride, it is going to be a fun one.
