Welcome to the first edition of Fever Friday. This is where we will take a look at some of the stories surrounding the Indiana Fever for the last week.
The Indiana Fever have had an interesting off-season. They traded one of their franchise players, Briann January to the Phoenix Suns in return for the eighth pick in the 2018 WNBA draft, They also traded a late pick to get Kayla Alexander, in my opinion the steal of the trade period.
They then added Kelsey Mitchell, Victoria Vivians and Stephanie Mavunga in a loaded draft. This means they have 17 players on their training camp roster since they waived Marissa Coleman.
As with every team there are core players, ones which should get a spot and the ones fighting for the end of the bench. Below is how the Fever will probably view their roster.
Definite | Probable | Fighting for a spot |
Candice Dupree | Kayla Alexander | Bashaara Graves |
Erica Wheeler | Natalie Achonwa | Jennifer Hamson |
Shenise Johnson | Jazmon Gwathmey | Erica McCall |
Tiffany Mitchell | Stephanie Mavunga | Alexis Peterson |
Kelsey Mitchell | Erlana Larkins | Jennie Simms |
Victoria Vivians | Jeanette Pohlen-Mavunga |
As with most WNBA teams, the first six tend to pick themselves. Candice Dupree is one of the best players in the league. Erica Wheeler, Shenise Johnson and Tiffany Mitchell are crucial for keeping the team competitive while the rebuild occurs.
Kelsey Mitchell and Victoria Vivians are the first of the new wave of this rebuild. This is going to take two or three seasons to develop but it has started well with two key pieces locked in.
Of the probable list, Kayla Alexander, Natalie Achonwa and Stephanie Mavunga represent the now and the future of the Fever front court. Alexander is a quality player who will work her was into the starting lineup in a short period of time.
Achonwa started last season but will be better coming off the bench. Mavunga also works hard and has the size and ability to work her way into some meaningful minutes by mid season.
Jazmon Gwathmey, Erlana Larkins and Jeanette Pohlen-Mavunga are all solid contributors who will come off the bench during busy weeks of the schedule.
Of the players fighting for a spot, Jennifer Hamson, Jennie Simms and Erica McCall will probably be the first players of the rebuild to be cut. Bashaara Graves and Alexis Peterson will almost certainly not be on the regular season roster.
The Fever start their preseason schedule on May 7th when they host the Chicago Sky. They then travel to Newark to take on the Washington Mystics on May 12.
The Fever then open their regular season on the 19th of May by again hosting the Chicago Sky. Neither of these teams made the playoffs last season so it will be interesting to see which has taken the bigger leap in the off-season.
Come back next week for the next edition of Fever Friday.
